Phikwe Hit By MDR TB

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Mayor Amogelang Mojuta has expressed concern at the increasing cases of Multi-Drug Resistant TB in Selebi-Phikwe. Already seven cases have been reported in the town and the mayor stated that appropriate action has been taken to prevent the spread of the disease.

He said patients have been referred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital in Francistown for isolation and treatment. He encouraged people to report to health facilities if they experience persistent coughing so they can be tested for TB and get treatment if necessary. Meanwhile, Selebi-Phikwe has experienced an increase in the number of diarrhea cases in the past month. The number is said to have exceeded the limit of 70 cases per month.

Briefing the full council meeting Mojuta, said over 90 cases were recorded last month in Botshabelo area. The rapid response team convened meetings to deal with the suspected outbreak and water samples were taken. Mojuta said results indicate that the water quality is within acceptable standards. "The emergency epidemic response teams have been monitoring the situation with a view to reversing it."
