SELEBI-PHIKWE: Phane traders using the Martin's Drift border post are reeling in shock after a standoff at South African border point of entry since last week.

One of the traders, Gosego Matshameko told Mmegi yesterday that she was warned not to sell Phane in South Africa without a business permit last year December. She explained that she was advised to get the permit from the South African embassy in Gaborone.

Matshameko said upon arrival at the embassy, she was told that the permit has long been cancelled. She noted that all she was told was that as long as she has a Botswana permit she could sell Phane in South Africa. "Starting from Thursday last week, Batswana are being stopped from selling phane in South Africa because they do not have permits. What is surprising is that we do not even know where the permit is taken," said Matshameko.
