Pathologist explains baby's death in murder case

FRANCISTOWN: Government consultant forensic pathologist Dr Vladimir Patnaik told Justice Moses Chinhengo of the High Court yesterday that a newly born baby at the centre of a murder case died from suffocation.

He said his findings revealed that Nyatsego Nthoiwa's new-born baby was killed by manual suffocation. He told a silent court that closing the mouth and blocking the nose suffocated the baby.

Nthoiwa is facing one count of murdering her baby in 2006 immediately after giving birth. Patnaik told the packed courtroom that he conducted a post-mortem on the baby and found clotted blood under the neck. "I also found that the baby's brain was swollen and congested. The lungs of the baby had some clotted blood," he stated. He added that the post-mortem revealed that there was haemorrhage in the glands of the neck.
