Party over for teachers

The gravy train could screech to a sudden halt for some teachers while others could get a new lease of life if the Trainers and Allied Workers Union (TAWU) fails to stop the implementation of a new Levels of Operation pay structure for the teaching service.

Teacher unions have objected to the manner in which government announced Levels of Operation for the teaching service last week. The Botswana Sectors of Educators Trade Union (BOSETU) said the way teachers' revised pay structures were announced epitomes an era where issues are not only individualised, but also highly politicised.

BOSETU general secretary Tobokani Rari said it is regrettable that the announcement was first made in the media before they were engaged.  In a media statement, the union said it is yet to meet with the ministry to appreciate whether there were any major changes from the recommendations they made together and map a way forward on implementation.
