Parties in row over voter trafficking

SELEBI-PHIKWE: The three main political parties - the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and the Botswana National Front (BNF) - are trading accusations over voter trafficking as the fight for political leverage intensifies months before the 2009 general election.

The BNF has been absolved from the offence but the BDP and BCP accuse each other of bussing in rented voters from surrounding constituencies in a desperate bid to shore up support.

A Selebi-Phikwe BDP councillor was reportedly turned away by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) last week when he tried to register 10 voters from Damchojenaa which falls under the Mmadinare constituency.
