The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) and the main opposition have defended the re-admission of errant members who were expelled orleft of their own volition. BDP executive secretary, Dr Comma Serema has said there is nothing strange with accepting members who were expelled since "politics is a game of numbers".

He said any potential voter is important in terms of numbers. Serema said the BDP has welcomed former members who were expelled for various reasons. He added that each case is treated on its own merit. He added in the last BDP congress, they welcomed back some former members who included those who stood for elections as independent candidates.

He said as long as one has repented, he or she could re-apply to be a member. The central committee would then consider the application. He stated that welcoming back members who have been expelled does not compromise discipline.
