Parties condemn raid on vendors and mechanics

Political parties have condemned Gaborone City Council (GCC) officials for harassing food vendors and mechanics operating from residential areas.

The publicity secretary of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), Dumelang Saleshando said chasing away the vendors is not a solution. He said this is an old issue that the council should have long taken care of. He said when the issue cropped up sometimes ago, the mayor promised to address it and told the vendors to continue with their operations.

Saleshando said it is surprising that the vendors are being arrested when the council has not come up with a solution. He said the situation is not helped by the fact that there is no national policy on the development of the informal sector. He said that hawkers and vendors are part of the informal sector and they provide a service even though it is not structured.
