Parliament: The next battle-ground

After the voting, counting and announcement of winners and losers have been done away with, the political battle moves to the new Parliament.

The biggest fight of all is going to be for the position of Speaker. There is no doubt that the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) will be returned to power but the party is disjointed and does not speak with one voice.

The differences will become clear when the election of the Speaker comes up. Under normal circumstances, the BDP will just put up a name and the person will surely be anointed Speaker. A few MPs will try to dissent, put in their own names, deliberately spoil voting ballots but this will never amount to anything significant. The BDP has had it easy but this time, things might be difficult, especially if the opposition takes sides in the BDP factional war.
