Parliament Fails To Form Quorum

Friday was a bad day for parliamentary business as the Speaker, Patrick Balopi, was forced to end proceedings because there was no quorum.

There were only 23 out of 57 MPs. The few who managed to beat the laziness that comes after tea break had to wait for 15 minutes for their colleagues to return. Very few MPs trickled in, forcing the Speaker to declare the proceedings closed.  Earlier, all questions that were on the order paper could not be answered because ministers were not present. Friday is a day for the House to debate motions tabled by MPs.

This is the second time since the beginning of the current session three weeks ago when Parliament had to adjourn early because of lack of quorum. Balopi told the Monitor that he was aware of the problem of MPs failing to form a quorum on several occasions. He stated that they will meet to discuss the matter. "That is all I can say now," he stated.
