Palapye split Chinese tender for locals

PALAPYE: A lucrative construction tender that combined the renovation of the Palapye Police Station and the construction of a new regional police headquarters in that town has been split, after authorities there decided to put aside the portion for the renovation for local contractors.

The tender was also split to  arrest cost-overruns as well as to  empower local construction companies. Senior assistant council secretary Maipelo Selatolo told a council meeting that the tender was awarded to a Chinese company but delays and cost overruns in the construction of the new police station led to the separation of the two projects.

He said tendering for the renovation of the old police station is yet to be done and priority will be given to local contractors. The new police station was scheduled for completion in May 2011 at P146.5 million.A District Development Committee report delivered to the council by district development officer, Oratile Dintwe says poor performance by the contractor delayed the project, which is now 96 percent complete. The report also attributes the delay in the completion of the Botswana International University of Science and Technology, which is two years behind schedule, to poor performance by the contractor. The revised completion date has been moved to August and mobilisation of materials has been cited as a major impediment.
