P77m for prisons

Given the sharp rise in crime the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has requested P77.1million to revamp prison facilities in the next seven years of National Development Plan 10 (NDP10).

Making the proposal, Minister Peter Siele said in Parliament yesterday that the money would be spent on the expansion of several prisons and installation of standby generators at the facilities across the country.

He said staff houses at the Gaborone First Offenders' Prison also needed to be rehabilitated to the tune of P1 million.  He revealed that an additional  P5 million would be spent to complete temporary structures for illegal immigrants at Block 10, Gaborone.The development of the ministry's website is expected to be completed by the end of this month and will be used to electronically disseminate information on the services provided by the ministry. The computerisation of MLHA will include Immigration and Citizenship System (ongoing); border control system (ongoing); and Labour Administration System.
