P58m suit halts KFC fresh produce meals

Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) CEO for Africa, Wynand Pretorious, says they have stopped the sale of fresh produce meals in Botswana following a P58 million lawsuit against the chain store in Australia early this year.

All 88 KFC stores in Botswana have ceased to serve vegetables and fruits with their burgers, twisters and salads.

For the past four months KFC tills have borne a notice with a picture of a tomato and the inscription 'all fresh produce is out of stock until further notice'. According to the Johannesburg CEO, complaints about food safety after a case of brain damage involving baby Monika Samaan of Sidney, Australia, as well as a similar complaint in Germany, had the fast food outlet introducing minimum food safety standards for fresh produce.
