P4 million sought for 'accidental discharge'

No-one has been charged for the shooting of unarmed civilian, Ofentse Morwe, at Phakalane in Gaborone just over a year ago because "the incident" was "an accident", says the Public Relations Unit of the Botswana Police Service (BPS).

Twenty-two year old Morwe, who is seeking P4 million in compensation, says he was shot and wounded by a plainclothes officer while he was on his way to work on August 22 last year. The bullet went through his pelvic area and smashed his upper left thighbone on its way out.

As the matter unfolds, the Attorney General wants to determine the "reasonableness" of the amount of damages sought by Morwe and has offered to settle the matter amicably, but without prejudice.
