'Our law oppresses us' - nurses, midwives

FRANCISTOWN: Nurses and midwives meeting here have called for the amendment of the legislation governing their profession saying that it oppresses rather than protects them.

They said this on Tuesday at a workshop organised by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Botswana at Tati River Lodge. The workshop targeted nurses and midwives at C4 to C1 salary scales. It deliberated on issues of professional conduct under the theme, "Improving nursing and midwifery care delivery through transforming professional conduct".

The nurses and midwives complained that the law used to govern their profession is unfair to them and should be altered in line with their line of duty. A nurse from Tshesebe clinic, Carlos Lekwalo, said that in their profession, they are expected to perform many duties - some of which fall outside their professional line of work.Lekwalo added that, when they do not perform some of the duties, which they believe to be out of their line of duty, they are punished.
