SELEBI-PHIKWE: Opposition parties have criticised the Mo Ibrahim Foundation for ranking Botswana third behind Mauritius and Cape Verde in governance in Africa.

Botswana Congress Party (BCP) secretary general, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang, told Mmegi that they have a problem with the method of ranking that the foundation is using dating back to the period when former president Festus Mogae was given the Mo Ibrahim award for good leadership.

He said that the award was misplaced."There were many things that were not going well under the presidency of Mogae. There was no consultation during that period. At least if the award was given to the country - not Mogae - it would have been better," he said. Gobotswang said the situation has now gotten worse under the Ian Khama leadership. He stated that even being ranked third, the foundation was just being generous. Gobotswang said Botswana could have been worse if the current situation had been taken into account. "The foundation was being generous when rating Botswana third in good governance. The education system is in tatters.
