The opposition has dismissed the budget speech as an anticlimax that illustrates the failure of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) to manage the economy.

Botswana Congress Party (BCP)leader and Gaborone Central legislator, Dumelang Saleshando, says Finance and Development Minister Kenneth Matambo spoke of a budget surplus just because they have shelved some projects.

"This shows that if you took away the diamonds, the BDP leadership would bolt," Saleshando says. "For them, running the economy is about taking funds from minerals and building roads."  The outspoken opposition MP says it was irresponsible of government to say it has decided not to employ more people in order to reduce the wage bill of the public service."What if doctors resign? Will they not replace them because they want to reduce the wage bill?," he queries.
