Botswana Defence Force (BDF) commander, Lt-Gen Tebogo Masire has been slammed for making what are perceived to be political statements during his recent visit to Zimbabwe. During the visit, the general reportedly heaped praise on President Robert Mugabe, called for closer ties between Botswana and Zimbabwe and slammed the Western media for its coverage of Africa.

The Leader of the Opposition, Botsalo Ntuane has reacted to the delivery by saying that the remarks are a cause for alarm and concern if accurate. He said Masire is free to embark on a goodwill visit to Zimbabwe to develop close ties between the two armies but making political statements is a no-go area.

"Any issues with political connotations are a no-go area. I just hope he was misquoted," Ntuane said.
