Oppenheimer sale of mining shares suspicious - Ntuane

The leader of opposition in the national assembly, Botsalo Ntuane, has questioned the timing of the Oppenheimer family decision to sell their 40 percent share in the De Beers mining company to Anglo American.

Responding to President Ian Khama's State of the Nation address yesterday, Ntuane said as the opposition, they suspect that there is more "to this abrupt development than what we [Botswana] as partners are being told."

The Oppenheimer family have a 40 percent share, Anglo American 45 percent, while Botswana has 15 percent in De Beers. The Oppenheimers announced late last week that Anglo American had agreed to buy their stake in the company. If the sale goes ahead, Anglo American will own 85 percent, with Botswana holding on to her 15 percent.
