OP mum over Nganunu

The Office of the President (OP) will not comment on the recent reports that Chief Justice, Julian Nganunu ordered a magistrate to release and change the conviction of his relative.

The coordinator of the Botswana Government Information Services, Dr Jeff Ramsay informed Mmegi that the highest office in the land would not answer questions nor comment on the issue. "The Office of the President does not find it appropriate to comment on allegations made in the press about the head of the judiciary," Ramsay replied to a questionnaire on the issue.

The 'Nganunu matter' started a few weeks ago when Mmegi reported that he sought to have judgment against his relative altered. The controversy, which casts a dim shadow on the ability of the judiciary to act without fear or favour has drawn muted reaction from the justice system and uproar from the public amidst calls for action to be taken against Nganunu. The OP's silence follows on a week of limited reaction from legal fraternity and the Botswana Law Society leadership.
