Officers To Investigate Defilement Reports At School

The Ministry of Education has dispatched a team of regional education officers to investigate reports of defilement at a Gaborone primary school. "It is a criminal offence and we want to establish if it is true the school authorities were aware of what was happening. The action we would be taking will be determined by the findings of the investigation," the director for primary education Segomotso Basiamang has said.

Reports say that seven boys in Standard Four at a Gaborone primary school have been defiling their female classmates for the past three months. The parents of the children have been informed about what is going on. The police have already interviewed about nine pupils said to be victims by Wednesday last week. The station commander for Central Police Station Superintendent Takongwa Mazwiduma explained that the law states that a male under the age of 12 is assumed to be incapable of having sexual intercourse. "What is being done is investigation only for the findings to be taken to the Director of Public Prosecution for a decision," he said.
