Nurses overworked, underpaid-PS

The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health, Newman Kahiya, has admitted that nurses in Botswana are overwhelmed with work.

His statement comes at a time when nurses have been complaining that their workload is too heavy.

They demand commensurate remuneration as compensation. Kahiya, who was officiating at the 40th anniversary of the Nurses Association of Botswana in Gaborone yesterday made the admission that government was aware "that the scope of practice of nurses in Botswana extends far beyond that of any nurse elsewhere in the world. Due to insufficient human resources, nurses take on the role of administrator, revenue collector, lab technician, pharmacy technician and medical practitioner," he said.
