Ntuane's defection gives Nasha a headache

The defection of former Leader of Opposition, Botsalo Ntuane from the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) to rejoin the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is giving Speaker of National Assembly, Margaret Nasha, a hard time.

She has revealed that after reading Ntuane's letter of resignation, she had to "consult intensely, and consult legal brains" on the future of the house, but still has no answers."I have therefore called a meeting for all opposition Members of Parliament to resolve this issue tomorrow morning (today)," she said yesterday at the beginning of the 3rd meeting of the 3rd session of the 10th Parliament. The matter, it seems, can only be resolved by opposition parties themselves - the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) which has six MPs, the BMD (five MPs) and the Botswana National Front (three MPs).

While the BCP is a majority opposition party, the BNF and the BMD have formed a coalition in Parliament, which makes them a majority. However, bad blood among the parties is a stumbling block to finding an amicable consensus. While the BCP is interested in the seat, the BNF-BMD axis says Parliamentary Standing Orders recognise their coalition. The seat of Leader of Opposition was unoccupied yesterday as Ntuane is attending the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) meeting in Johannesburg. Nasha stated that his presence would not have made any impact because he is a BDP member. She further stated that the new sitting arrangement would be established today after the parties agree on their new leader.
