Ntuane unites them

On Saturday, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Botsalo Ntuane got married to his long time sweetheart Mpho Masome. For him it was a fulfilment of the adage 'life begins at 40'.

But the wedding might also have been the beginning of a big shift in our political landscape, depending on how you view it.

The simple traditional setup of a white tent, a few reserved seats and 'first-come-first serve' for the remaining seats belied the shifting sands of time and emotion inside the tent. Here the country's political who is who sat, chatting easily. At the VIP table sat President Ian Khama, former president Sir Ketumile Masire and his wife Gladys Masire, Balete Paramount Chief Kgosi Mosadi Seboko, Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) president Gomolemo Motswaledi, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Treasurer Satar Dada, BDP Chairman Daniel Kwelagobe and Head of Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) Isaac Kgosi. Kgosi sat sandwiched between Khama and Motswaledi, as if to protect either man from the other. Motswaledi has lately distinguished himself as one of Khama's worst critics. He is the same man who took Khama to court for unfairly removing him from his post as Secretary-General of the BDP. He lost then, and at one point owed nearly a million Pula in legal fees. That was until the party he helped form and lead soon thereafter - the BMD - and sympathisers bailed him out. On this wedding day though, enmity appeared to have gone out the window as the two sworn enemies exchanged pleasantries in full view of the public.
