Ntuane advises liquor industry to seek legal redress

Specially elected MP, Botsalo Ntuane, has advised liquor traders to seek legal redress if they believe the proposed liquor regulations will have the effect of depriving them of a legitimate source of livelihood. The MP was a guest speaker at the launch of the alcoholic beverage, Kingfisher Beer, at Cresta Lodge in Gaborone recently.

"If stakeholders remain convinced that the intended regulations will have the effect of depriving them of a legitimate source of livelihood, then as citizens of a democratic and constitutional state, they will be within their rights to seek protection from the courts," he said.

Ntuane said government has not stated what it would do to assist business people who invested in the industry and have loans to pay.  "Government does not wish to concede that its proposed new regulations for closing hours will simply drive the liquor industry underground with unregulated shebeens mushrooming all over the place.
"There are no answers regarding the number of jobs that will be lost as a result of the new regime. In a country with our level of unemployment, any job lost spells a tragedy for many families," he said in part.
