No one to meet ministers at tribal capitals

Emergency kgotla meetings planned by government for this week to repair its damaged image backfired when some dikgosi left ministers out in the cold to attend to important official engagements lined up for the day on Monday.

In Ramotswa, the Minister of the Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Kitso Mokaila, was greeted by empty chairs in the offices of Kgosi Mosadi Seboko and her deputy, who had reportedly only learned about the meeting earlier that morning.

A similar fate awaited other ministers in Molepolole, and Mochudi where there was no kgosi to welcome them in accordance with protocol. Kgosi Seboko of Balete told Mmegi yesterday that she was not aware of Mokaila's meeting to which, as it turned out, even the Member of Parliament Odirile Motlhale was not invited.  "I was coming to a Ntlo ya Dikgosi meeting in Gaborone and did not know about the minister's meeting," she said before referring our enquiries to the Chairman of the Upper House, Kgosi Puso Gaborone of Batlokwa.
