No New Year's Resolutions - Just determination to succeed

At this time of the year, the phrases and greetings at this time of the year are: ''ngwaga o mosha'', "Happy new year", "Goledzwa"and the most abused "Compliments.'

They are said with joy and excitement as people wish each other happiness for the duration of the new year. What is said as much is "My new year resolutions are..." As soon as the clock strikes 12 on December 31st, many declare the changes they intend to introduce into their lives and how they will tackle achieving their goals, to successfully achieve them. Such an accomplishment often time brings a sense of pride and joy. However, we all know what really happens not too long after making these resolutions - they are broken and forgotten until the end of the year.

It is for this reason that I have decided not to make any New Year's resolutions. I don't want to let myself down and feel like I have not accomplished anything positive for myself in the unlikely event of my going through the entire year honouring the New Year's resolutions I have made. Keeping it real is the name of the game! A New Year is a clean slate presented to someone, giving him or her the opportunity to re-write, re-group and re-asses. The coming of a new year can really be viewed as being given another chance to do-over anything that went wrong in the past year. A New Year is filled with hope and that is what I choose to focus on instead of crossing out or continuously editing my New Year's resolutions.
