LOBATSE: The proposed export of live cattle to Angola for breeding purposes poses no threat to the country's beef industry, says David Falepau, CEO of Botswana Meat Commission.

Addressing members of the media in Lobatse last week, Falepau said the chances of Angola competing with Botswana for lucrative beef markets is slim. "We must first look at the issue this way; what are the chances of us building Angola's beef industry through live cattle export? Very little to none, it takes a lot of time and many stages are involved for a country's beef market to evolve to that level," he said.

The Ministry of Agriculture inked a deal with their Angolan counterparts in August this year to export live cattle to the coastal Portuguese-speaking nation. The news was received with mixed feelings by many people, including some Members of Parliament (MPs) who perceived it as almost suicidal to the country's beef industry.
