No more Khama in Nchindo case

The debacle surrounding the involvement of President Ian Khama as a witness in the Nchindo graft case has ended after the state withdrew the charge that relied on his testimony.

The former managing director of Debswana, Louis Nchindo, his son Garvas and former senior Debswana managers Joe Matome and Jacob Sesinyi now faces 35 counts of corruption, which they have denied. Yesterday, Regional Magistrate Lot Moroka gave the prosecutors a leeway to withdraw the charge and reduce the counts from 36. The state prosecutors have been under enormous pressure to acquire the statement from the president as they have intended to call him as a witness.

The withdrawn charge, drafted as count three in the indictment relied heavily on the statement of Khama. The count caused a huge public debate after the court heard that Khama who was Vice President under Festus Mogae when the crimes allegedly occured was unwilling to help the prosecution.
