No bailout for mines-Gaolathe

The government has no plans to lend money to its bleeding mining industry, amid the effects of the financial crisis.

The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Baledzi Gaolathe, says the job losses experienced in the mining sector are "in response to the slump in global demand and prices for their products rather than credit problems".

"Government does not have unlimited resources to be able to restrain private companies from laying off employees," the minister said, responding to questions about why the government is not lending money to companies such as Debswana and BCL.
