Nkate takes the blame

The Minister of Education and Skills Development, Jacob Nkate has said he fully takes the blame for the sewerage problem at the newly opened Goodhope Senior Secondary School.

The problem forced the school to close a week early. Nkate said he authorised the opening of the school despite the fact that he was advised that the infrastructural development was not complete. He defended the decision saying that if he did not act, about 1,000 students would have been out of school. I think I made the right decision to authorise the opening of the school even though I was advised that it was not fully complete. Had I not taken that decision about 1,000 students would be roaming the streets.

The minister said a stop-gap facility put in place to soak affluent from the school filled up within two days though it was intended to work for six months. He said they were compelled to find a pond to dispose waste from the school. Nkate said the early closure was meant to give stakeholders enough time to look for a long lasting solution before the schools re-open on May 6.
