FRANCISTOWN: Education Minister, Jacob Nkate, has cast doubt on the decision of one of his main political rivals, Thato Kwerepe to back him in the race for Ngamiland parliamentary seat. "Well, if he said that (backing him) and actually does it, that will be good for the campaigns.

Obviously, that is important but that is yet to manifest itself," he said when told that Kwerepe is supporting him. The minister said he is yet to hear from Kwerepe though he has been told that a suggestion that they work together had been made to him (Kwerepe). There have been reports that the politician is planning to sabotage Nkate who beat him in the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) primaries last year. Kwerepe has been in the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction of the party that is opposed to the Nkate-Merafhe alliance. Besides saying he is backing Nkate, the politician has abandoned the Kedikilwe-Kwelagobe faction. "I am going to take advantage of the Sunday meeting in Sehithwa, addressed by amongst others President Ian Khama to denounce factionalism as an evil that continues to eat the party's gains," declared Kwerepe. He denied that he was planning to sabotage Nkate. "I have always declared my support for Nkate and this was immediately after losing the primaries to him. I strongly subscribe to the notion that what comes first is the party and personal interest later. I would have opted to work with the opposition parties that had approached me to contest on their tickets. The other option would have been going solo as a mokoko (independent candidate)," he said.

He stated that his loyalty to the party has encouraged him to accept defeat and rally behind the winning team.
