FRANCISTOWN: Former mayor, Peter Ngoma has buckled the trend by supporting a motion to give more power to councils despite the fact that his ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has rejected it.

The motion was moved in Parliament by Botswana National Front (BNF) president Otsweletse Moupo but was defeated by the BDP. However, Ngoma who is now a nominated BDP councillor has supported the motion and said time is ripe for councils to stand as independent bodies.

He said people blame councillors when developments delay yet the councils are controlled by the central government.
