Ngami farmers want land reform for the poor

MAUN: Chairman of the North West Integrated Farmers Association Simon Bojosi has challenged government to institute a land reform programme that favours poor communal farmers in Ngamiland.

Speaking in an interview with Mmegi, Bojosi said the dwindling livelihoods of livestock farmers in Ngamiland are due to the susceptibility of the livestock sector to animal disease outbreaks. In 1995, the outbreak of the cattle lung disease ultimately resulted in government exterminating an entire 320,000 cattle stock in Ngamiland.Government opted for the eradication exercise to get rid of the disease.

Ten years following cattle restocking, a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak was reported in Habu in 2007 resulting in the whole district being declared FMD-affected. For six years, since 2007, the district has been reeling from the effects of FMD.According to Bojosi, the outbreaks of livestock diseases will not be prevented until government, through the Ministry of Lands and Housing and Tawana Landboard, make a dispensation for the fencing off of the communal areas into group ranches for communal farmers.
