New Twist In Air Botswana Privatisation Mess

Parliament has suspended the privatisation talks between Air Botswana and South African Airlink because of illegalities. The move came after the MP for Francistown North, Khumongwana Maoto, tabled a motion without notice last Thursday. The motion requested the House to adjourn debate and discuss the troubled Air Botswana privatisation as a matter of public importance. Maoto called for suspension of on-going discussions and/or negotiations concerning privatisation of Air Botswana, as the current privatisation exercise does not conform to the spirit of the Air Botswana Transition Act and the Civil Aviation Regulation Reform Act.

He was concerned that the on-going privatisation requires or entails the closure or liquidation of the existing company while the law envisaged the privatisation of Air Botswana as a going concern.

He said that reports of liquidation and retrenchments and talk that there is an officer at the Office of the President pushing for the adopted model are worrying.  Maoto quoted a letter allegedly written by Air Botswana General Manager Lance Brogden as evidence that there are a number of things wrong with the privatisation of the national airline. He added that government needs to gather information on the relationship between South African Airlink with Lesotho and Swazi national airlines. He urged the government to consider the economic impact of Air Botswanas relationship with South African Airlink.  He warned that the company has an unstable relationship with the Swazi and Lesotho airlines.  The legislator said that the on-going negotiations are way out of the initial privatisation plan.
