WINDHOEK: Namibian cabinet has approved the proposal of a mining company in Botswana, which intends to export coal from Botswana, via Namibian ports, to international destinations.

This means that a new rail link across the Kalahari desert to Mariental will have to be built. CIC Energy Corporation intends developing a coal mine at Mmamabula north of Gaborone, which has about 2,8 billion tonnes of coal reserves. A 2 400 megawatt power station is also planned.

According to the latest Cabinet briefing paper, a Namibian company, Nambot Investments, also submitted a project proposal called 'BotNam Rail and Harbour'. CIC Energy Corporation and NamBot Investments are now jointly targeting the development of the Trans-Kalahari Railway Line and the export of over 10 million tons of coal from Botswana via both Namibian ports.
