New pneumonia, diarrhoea vaccinations launched in Phikwe

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Selebi-Phikwe District Health Management Team has launched the introduction of two new vaccines for pneumonia and diarrhoea, which are said to be the main cause of infant deaths worldwide.

The first baby to receive the two vaccines on Tuesday in Selebi-Phikwe was two-month-old Shelter Moses after which the mayor Godfrey Mbaiwa encouraged parents to adhere to the health workers instructions, because prevention is better than cure.

He said only four countries in Africa, Botswana among them, has upheld the World Health Organisation's recommendation to administer the two vaccines alongside the common infants vaccines. He said the WHO recommendation was in view of alarming mortality rate among children and cited the recent 17 babies who succumbed to the two diseases in Ngamiland.
