SELEBI-PHIKWE: Assistant Minister of Health, Gaothaetse Matlhabaphiri has raised concern about the escalation of new HIV infections in Selebi-Phikwe.

Matlhabaphiri said that it is disturbing to find that the new infections stand at 4.66 percent, the third highest in Botswana.
Speaking during the launch of the Botswana TB/HIV Policy over the weekend, Matlhabaphiri said that TB/HIV co-infections in Selebi-Phikwe ranks the highest in the country, with reported rates as high as 89 percent in 2008. He said that this TB rate is a cause for concern. He said the 2009 report showed 425 per 100 000 population.

"The policy document that is being launched was developed to ensure that all stakeholders involved in TB and HIV care widen their scope, to deliberately integrate TB/HIV care for the dually infected. The document provides the basis for enhanced coordination and collaboration of all programs," he said.
