New drug to fight HIV resistance

A new drug has been developed to deal with resistant HIV. Raltegravir is part of a new class of therapies being developed as an effective supplement to the current antiretrovirals.

The new drugs are used in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
 
They help people whose HIV infection is no longer adequately controlled by the current therapy and whose virus is resistant to multiple agents. Private medical Dr Diana Dickinson says that although the number of people who need Raltegravir are small, it is very useful to them.

She is hopeful that Botswana would approve the new drug as has been done in the United States.
