New diarrhoea cases abating,but deaths on the rise

Weekly recorded cases of diarrhoea have been going down, raising hopes that the diarrhoea outbreak that recently hit the country hard is abating, Mmegi has learnt.

Acting director in the Department of Public Health, Setshwano Mokgweetsinyane told Mmegi in an interview yesterday that although the spate of diarrhoea still qualifies as an outbreak, figures of new cases have gone down.


"In the week ending September 4, 1,053 cases were recorded, the following week, ending September 11, 1,123 cases were recorded, while only 800 cases were reported in the week ending September 18," he said.However, the death toll continues to climb, with 85 deaths in the 7th week of the outbreak. The 85 deaths occurred the week ending September 17, Mokgweetsinyana said.
