Nata adopts "re a nyalana" Initiative

NATA: Hailed by many as a noble initiative as it discourages the practice of cohabitation, the wedding initiative dubbed "Re A Nyalana" (we are getting married) seems to be gaining popularity.

Nata village has also embraced this initiative. Authorities in the village are adamant that the initiative could alleviate problems brought by cohabitation.Speaking on behalf of the village chief, Mokgwathi Makgesi, Nata's Headman of Records Letsogo Kgaswa, says; "We had 14 elderly couples lining up to get married in our Kgotla late last month. The District Commissioner (DC) came all the way from Tutume to solemnise the marriages .

"The DC from the Kgatleng District and a delegation from Bokaa were also present at the event," he told The Monitor.More marriages are expected towards the end of the year  with some couples already registering to take part in the second mass marriage. The mass weddings conducted  at the Kgotla through this effort is hoped to help end problems often faced by co-habiting couples when one of them dies which often sees mostly women deprived of the estate of their deceased partner, simply because they were not married. Children also suffer in the war for the estates of their departed fathers. The initiative which aims to eliminate cohabitation mainly features elderly couples who have been cohabitating for years. Marriages are conducted en-masse at the Kgotla. Last October 11 couples tied the knot at once, in Kgatleng District.
