Speaker of the National Assembly Margaret Nasha called Serowe North Member of Parliament (MP) Tshekedi Khama to order after he uttered words like 'Makwerekwere' in the House yesterday afternoon.

Though it was not clear what Tshekedi was saying, he repeatedly used the word 'Makwerekwere', which attracted the Speaker's attention. She told him to retract the words, which he did. The word is used to demean African foreigners, especially those originating from the north.

Tshekedi, who is younger brother to President Ian Khama, was commenting on the 2011/12 budget proposal for the Ministry of Infrastructure, Science and Technology and he accused government of favouring foreign companies at the disadvantage of local contractors. He said that foreign companies were engaged for design and construction of Sir Seretse Khama International Airport and already the structure is showing defects.
