Nano technology could be used to cure brain cancer

A new study done at the University of Chicago's Brain Tumour Centre and the United States Department of Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has shown that by combining nano particles with biological material, in this case antibodies, they can target the cancerous tissue in the brain without harming surrounding healthy cells.

Titanium dioxide nano particles were used since they are sensitive to light, and the sensitivity used by the scientists to kill the cells. The new therapy works a bit like the Trojan horse.

The titanium dioxide nano particles are guided to the cancer cells by the antibodies which are able to selectively seek out the tumour cells. Once they find them, the scientists shine light on the cancerous cells. The light causes the titanium dioxide nano particles to release free oxygen radicals.
