Namibian refugees repatriated

Today (23 August), 34 persons, comprising eight families and three individuals, are voluntarily returning to Namibia under a tripartite repatriation arrangement involving the Botswana and Namibia governments and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The refugees will be transported from Dukwi settlement, where they have been hosted by the government and assisted by UNHCR since 2000. As it has happened with the previous repatriations, returnees are expected to cross into Namibia at Ngoma border post, where they will be received by Namibian government and UNHCR representatives. The Botswana Red Cross Society will provide medical staff in case medical care is required.

It is in the interest of the two governments and UNHCR that returnees are assisted to return voluntarily and with dignity. From the reception at Ngoma, they will travel to their home villages to resume their lives in Namibia.
