MYWO vows to combat baby dumping and abortion

The newly launched Maikano Wellness Organisation (MYWO) aims to address social problems such as baby dumping and abortion through positive behavioural and health interventions for the youth.

The chairman of the organisation, Nkosi Bentu said they intend to engage the youth in recreational activities as well as various interventions in schools and the community at large. Bentu said it is important to protect newly born babies. "I want to achieve that by paying attention to the factors that skew the experiences of poor mothers and their vulnerability. All the deaths associated with these incidents are in fact preventable," he says.

He says the profiles of women who abandoned, dumped or killed their infants include poor, single mothers under the age of 25 "often first time mothers". He added: "No one can ignore that, statistics are high. About 450 infants died in Botswana as a result of baby dumping."
