Mwanawasa buried, presidential race heats up

LUSAKA: Zambia has declared 3 September a public holiday in memory of President Levy Mwanawasa who was buried with full military honours at Lusaka's Embassy Park near Cabinet Office yesterday.

Born on September 3, 1948 at Mufulira, Mwanawasa would have celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday. He died on August 19 at Percy Military Hospital in Paris, France after suffering a stroke in Cairo where he was scheduled to attend a special African Union (AU) Summit on the Zimbabwean political crisis. The meeting was held at the Egyptian tourism resort town of Sharma el Sheik on the Red Sea coast.

Meanwhile, the ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) national secretary, Katele Kalumba has announced that the number of members seeking endorsement as the party's candidate in the presidential by-election has reached 16.
