Mutharika dissolves cabinet as pressure mounts

BLANTYRE: Malawi's president Bingu Wa Mutharika on Friday dissolved his 40-plus member cabinet, a development political commentators have described as a sign that his government is facing a crisis.

By Sunday, it was still unclear whether his decision to dissolve his cabinet was in a reaction to calls by members of the civil society to opt for a lean cabinet as the country faces numerous political, social and economic problems. 

"It's not easy to tell what the next composition of his cabinet would be like. However, one key indication is that his government is in crisis," Malawi's renowned historian and writer Desmond Dundwa Phiri said.
