Murder suspects freed for lack of evidence

FRANCISTOWN: Suspects in the brutal killing of the late Debswana assistant communications officer, Irene Nthoi have been freed by the High Court for lack of evidence.

Justice Zibani Makhwade released Zimbabwean brothers Fanuel and Romeo Mpofu because there is no evidence linking them to the crime. The judge said the logical conclusion is that Nthoi was killed by another person.

He said the scene of crime officer lifted 20 fingerprints from Nthoi's Isuzu motor vehicle. Six of the prints matched the left palm print of Romeo, the fourth accused, while two matched his right palm print. "One of the items found at the scene was an axe. The axe belonged to Mooketsi Medupi. The first accused (Fanuel) and fourth accused (Romeo) submitted to the contrary. It was submitted by the prosecution that the axe was the murder weapon," the judge said.
