Multiple offender pleads guilty

FRANCISTOWN: Multiple offender, Elson Maphorisa of Zimbabwe has been jailed for three years by Principal Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu on his own plea of guilty.

In addition, the magistrate ordered that he should receive corporal punishment - four strokes - for breaking into and stealing from a warehouse at Dumela Industrial. He was sentenced to one-year imprisonment from escaping from lawful custody. The sentences run concurrently.

Mulalu noted that in sentencing Maphorisa, he has taken into consideration his own plea of guilty and his mitigation. He said that all the stolen objects had been recovered. However, he raised concern that the offences of house breaking and theft are prevalent in the country. "Efforts therefore must be taken in passing sentences to ensure that people's property is safe," said Mulalu.
