Member of Parliament (MP) for Molepolole South and chairman of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) Daniel Kwelagobe has warned Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Oreeditse Molebatsi, against the proposed idea of selling live animals to Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique as tantamount to killing the Botswana beef market.

Firing a question during the ministers' question time in Parliament on Friday, Kwelagobe said that a similar practice was responsible for the collapse of the ostrich industry in Botswana because buyers needed not to buy ostrich meat from Botswana. He warned that the people in those countries may end up breeding more cattle and even competing with Botswana for the European Union (EU) market.

Molebatsi said that there are too many cattle in the Ngamiland and Chobe East districts whose owners do not know where to sell. But MPs advised that the country should focus on finding good markets for its beef and not live animals. He said that the Angolan market has potential to boost Botswana's economy because the first 40 tons of beef have already been dispatched to that country. He said that the only challenge is that of communication because the official language in Angola is Portuguese, which many Batswana do not understand.
