Members of Parliament on Friday took the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Kenneth Matambo, to task over the dropping of three Botswana Development Corporation (BDC) board members in the face of corruption reports in a P500 million glass project in Palapye.

During the ministers' question session, the MP for Gaborone Central, Dumelang Saleshando, started the debate demanding to know what exactly was happening at BDC, why the minister dropped three of BDC board members on the eve of a disciplinary hearing replacing them with members of the previous board. He also wanted to know whether the investigation covers the period when he was the Managing Director of BDC, and whether he does not consider the practice tantamount to conflict of interest.

Matambo responded that, by dropping the three board members he was protecting the reputation of BDC and he had to do it immediately as the action had long been delayed. He said while the audit report has not been released, someone has already leaked it to the press. The minister said that he was also protecting the Palapye Glass project, which is 72 percent complete, hence government risked to lose a lot should the project be delayed further. Matambo said that he made the decision in the best interest of the nation, as all stakeholders, the public and government, were eagerly waiting for the completion of the project for it to start producing glass for the local and international market and create employment. He said that the dropping of three board members was not meant to interfere with the disciplinary process, confirming that the process will go ahead and proper action will be taken against those found to be on the wrong side of the law.
